Today it’s been the last day of the eHealth week 2010, loads of conclusions have been made, a lot of ideas have been exposed and there’s this feeling that we are working as a team. Different projects around the world have been presented and speakers discovered similar applications in other countries, like twins that find each other after a long time, working for the same aims.

We would like to highlight several conclusions in this last post:

1. To make all this eHealth system an eHealth governance have to be created, to ensure that all the ideas thrown up in the air are collected and processed to drive forward the project.

2. The technology is bringing new opportunities to change our lifestyle for a healthier one.

3. Without any doubt, the eHealth has to be integrated to the health system in the best and most efficient way possible to ensure a larger number of patients to be treated successfully.

4. Most of the political and governmental came to the eHealth week 2010 with great expectations and left with challenges to be achieve, probably bigger than the ones they were confronting before the event.

5. The eHealth system should be the result of healthcare professionals, politicians, institutions, private enterprises and citizens.

6. The center of the system is the patient and he/she has to have the right information at the right time.

7. The social networking is already a big tool for the majority of the world population, some of the information that is shared there is bad. The institutions and platforms (already exiisting like yelp, sermo, etc.) should make sure that the information in these tools is correct.

8. There are researches that are being already developed that show how the eHealth is a reality (not only a dream) and the results are good in all the examples.

9. One of the biggest challenges is to achieve the interoperability. The sooner we achieve standardization, the sooner the system will be implemented.

10. eHealth is the sustainable version of the Health system around the world, without it in a few years the health systems across the planet won’t be sustainable anymore.

Last track 2 session: The eHealth for Mental Health

The last session of the track 2, called ehealth Adressing Global Challenges for Local Actions, have focused in the application of the telematics and internet solutions for depression patients.

The three examples presented in Australia, Spain and Finland.

The speakers: Gavin Andrews, Cristina Botella and Ikka Korhonen agreed in different points:

The eHealth applied to the mental system ensures that the patient feels comfortable at home and the treatment works even better than the face to face in some cases.

The computer have a plan for recovery, and the patient can not be distracted by the face to face, but follow the different steps of the process with there one pace.

The online programs are much more cheap than some of treatments that already exists.

The eHealth for Mental diseases is still on trial, but the programs developed are successful and show even better results than the existing therapies. Look up for www.CRUfAD.org

Last track 1 session: ‘eHealth Procurement’

eHealth procurement is also an important topic to bear in mind when talking about eHealth development and implementation. This week, the different speakers have been talking about the importance of interoperability with the different European countries, and they all agree that to make it possible a common healthcare model of action, including eHealth procurement, has to be developed.

Different projects around Europe have been exposed to show how they are using technologies and incorporating them in the workplace. Nowadays, these projects are local, but they all aim at making a global project to improve the systems, get better quality and try to decrease costs.

If the institutions normalize and rationalize their purchases, in the short run patients will be benefited through a more agile administration of waiting lists and surgery schedulings.

The fact that public institutions are the slowest actors in innovation procurement, surely due to bureaucracy, should estimulate providers to focus mostly on small and midsize private health organizations.

eHEALTH WEEK 2010

Barcelona, 18 de Marzo de 2010.- La estrategia de comunicación móvil y digital desplegada para el evento “eHealth Week 2010” celebrado en Barcelona del 15 al 18 de marzo ha conseguido trascender las paredes del Centro de Convenciones Internacional de Barcelona (CCIB).

La localización de grupos de interés en la red y disponer de plataformas de participación móvil y digitales ha permitido sumar más de 600 interacciones y comentarios a las 100 conferencias celebradas. A través del canal SMS y páginas WAP se ha podido consultar información de cada ponente, así como conocer la agenda a través de una aplicación multiplataforma.

El seguimiento en vivo a través de microblogging, ha facilitado a los medios y profesionales del sector “asistir” a cualquier ponencia. Medios como “Diario Médico” han sido activos participantes a través del Twitter del evento.

Joan Cornet, presidente ejecutivo de la Fundació TICsalut, del Departamento de Salut de la Generalitat de Catalunya, afirma “Internet y el móvil no pueden ir por separado en el evento referente en Europa del mundo de la eSalud.”

Rosa Manaut, responsable de comunicación del congreso afirma: “Esta acción marca punto de inflexión en el seguimiento de eventos y congresos con la combinación de estrategias de comunicación digital y móvil”

Marc Bonavia, director de marketing de SITmobile afirma: “Para nosotros el canal móvil tiene un papel estratégico en la eSalud, permitiendo desde mejorar la gestión de los hospitales con recordatoriospor SMS hasta el despliegue de acciones rápidas en situaciones de emergencia sanitaria o soluciones para mejorar la calidad asistencial”.

Barcelona, 18 March, 2010.- The mobile and digital strategy developed for the “eHealth Week 2010” held in Barcelona from 15 to 18 March has managed to transcend the walls of Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB).

The finding of interest groups on the net and the fact of having mobile and digital participation platforms has enabled more than 600 interactions and comments to be added to the 100 talks held. Through SMS and WAP pages, it has been possible to consult information on each speaker and to see the agenda through a multiplatform application.

The live microblogging following enabled the sector media and professionals “to attend” any talk. Media such as “Diario Médico” have been active participants in the event through Twitter.

Joan Cornet, the CEO of the TICsalut Foundation, from the Government of Catalonia Health Ministry says, “Internet and mobiles could not be separated in the benchmark eHealth event in Europe.”

Rosa Manaut, responsible for the congress communication, says, “This action marks a point of inflection in further events and congresses with the combination of digital and mobile communication strategies”

The PROMIS Program

The PROMIS program is developing, testing, and implementing a reporting system to collect and quantify clinically important outcomes such as pain, fatigue, physical functioning, emotional distress, and social role participation. During the first phase of the initiative (2004 to present), PROMIS formed a network of researchers that developed questions or “items” to analyze these five outcomes or “domains.” PROMIS is creating a psychometrically-robust computer adaptive testing (CAT) system, based on item response theory (IRT), to administer these items. In addition, it is developing a web-based system to give clinical researchers access to the item banks and the CAT system.

Neuro-Musculo-Skeletal Physiome

This is a VPH Internationalisation cooperation project between the European integrated project VPHOP, and the United States NIH Center for physics-based Simulation of Biological Structures, SIMBIOS.

The Virtual Physiological Human (VPH)

The Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) is a technological and methodological framework that once fully realised will make possible the investigation of the human body as a whole by integrating clinical, instrumental, and biochemical information into patient-specific models capable of capturing the systemic nature of most physiopathological processes.

VPH concept was first elaborated in Barcelona in 2005, and quickly became a key concept for European biomedical research, and a flagship objective of the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). ICT tools are essential, both to gather such data and to analyse it. The concept of a virtual physical human is a sophisticated computer modelling tool, which compares observations of an individual patient and relates them to a vast dataset of observations of others with similar symptoms and known conditions. By processing all this information, the model can simulate the likely reaction of the individual patient to possible treatments or interventions. Such tools will not only improve the quality of treatment offered to patients who are already ill or injured, but could also be used in preventive medicine, to predict occurrence or worsening of specific diseases in people at risk, for example through family history.

TRACK 1: eHealth and Healthcare Organisation, The Chicken and the Egg

Cultural references to the chicken and egg intend to point out the futility of identifying the first case of a circular cause and consequence, says Wikipedia. The goal of this session was trying to reach consensus on which goes first: eHealth or Healthcare Organisations.

The most important hightlight of this conference’s final conclusion was that eHealth and Healthcare Organisation are not “cause and consequence”, both concepts are growing up together. The effort on the part of each health steakholder is to work on the implementation of eHealth through Health Organisations. One the most important issues that was discussed was the resistance to change and how it can slow down eHealth implementation. Clinics are the most resistant followed by technologists and managers.

Another point of the conference was the discussing local individual health institutions. Individually, they are improving their organisation, but they agree that improvements has no sense if not global.

There are technical barriers like syntax, semantics or security that impedes empowering the expert in the use of eHealth tools. Politics and organisations are also barriers in the process.

Track 2 session: Standards to Global Scene.

The last session of the Day on this track has been about the Standarization on the Global Scene.

The matter has been introduced by the comissioner Ilias Iakovidis, a Hungarian politic that shows true passion for what he does and wisely encourages the attendants to the conferences to follow up some ideas to meet the eHealth project implementation.

As a politic he defends that the politics can help to overcome the challenges and finally get to the standarization and implementation of the eHealth, but also claims to the other actors their collaboration, we are a work team.

Kee Molenaar, Charles Jaffe and Jennifer Zelmer have talk and introduced different organizations such as the IHTSDO (http://www.ihtsdo.org/) and the HL7 (http://www.hl7.org/).

The first organization is working on the development and promotion of the safe information exchange between different healthcare institutions and organisations to reach interoperability between them. Interoperability will bring better and faster diagnosis of the diseases, as told earlier during the other sessions.

The second organization does the same role in dedicated to providing a comprehensive framework and related standards for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information that supports clinical practice and the management, as they announce on their website.

Both organisations are willing to professionals and healthcare organizations to inseminate them with questions, feedback to achieve a better standardarization system that leads to a better Health system.
